History and Community Served:
The Saginaw County community is a location filled with rich culture and diversity. The County was originally industrialized to support the logging and timber industry (1850-1884)4, gaining the name of the “Lumber capital of the world.”5 With the Saginaw River running through the center of the area, this waterway was a major establishment of trade and the main infrastructural impact that supported transportation of lumber.

Industries quickly shifted away from lumber to focus on manufacturing industries, coal mining, and farming.5 When industries began decreasing in job growth and opportunities, the Saginaw County area began to suffer, leading to a major reason for the poverty levels seen today.6
It is important to remember the history of the Saginaw County community to understand the needs and struggles of locals. These factors are major contributors to the Saginaw County we see today. However, the history and decline of Saginaw County’s infrastructure are not the only reasons for the health challenges faced.
